Service-Learning Project Ideas for Advisories:

  1. Pennies for Peace - http://www.penniesforpeace.org/
    • There is an overview, a provided curriculum, and listed ties to service-learning on this website.
  2. Military Backpacks/Donations - http://www.operationfirstresponse.org/
    • This website offers an outline of what to collect to send to wounded soldiers (we would possibly also need to collect money to cover shipping). To tie to service-learning, you could have students advocate for more resources for soldiers and/or have students write letters of support to the soldiers. Note: There are several organizations that are similar to this one, so feel free to explore!
    • As a related project, check out: http://operationgoodybag.org/. This organization provides support and appreciation for those lost on 9/11 and also support our current military men and women.
  3. Salvation Army Donations -  http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/
    • This website provides acceptable donations and volunteer opportunities. There is a Salvation Army within a mile of the campus, so we could visit the facility to volunteer. To tie this to service-learning, we could research the population that are most benefited by the Salvation Army, the number of resources needed to sustain such an organization, and set specific goals for a project at MCHP.
  4. Soles4Souls - http://soles4souls.org/
    • This website provides information on the purpose of donating shoes and clothing items to help end poverty. This topic is researchable and would be a more global perspective of the work done for Salvation Army (local impact).
  5. Food Corps - https://foodcorps.org/
    • This is an organization focused on healthy eating and changing the ways that schools feed children. They build gardens and teach students in limited-resource schools how to grow fresh food and maintain a healthy food schedule.
  6. Options for creating MCHP Teams: Think about possible teams that we could create to support research foundations.
  7. Options for supporting countires in need:
  8. Options for helping animal organizations:
  9. Book Drive for Literacy at MCHP:
    • Bring in a copy of your favorite book and write an inscription in the cover of why you like it.
    • Collect money and list of books to purchase?
  10. Multi-Cultural Fair/Tolerance Fair/Diversity Fair/Mix-It-Up Day - http://www.tolerance.org/
  11. Vocabulary Supported Food Donations - freerice.com
